What is a Dual Diagnosis?

Co-occuring Disorders/Dual Diagnosis

Co-occurring disorders, also known as dual diagnosis, is when a person has both a substance use disorder and a mental health condition, such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, or bipolar disorder. A dual diagnosis requires specialized treatment that targets both disorders and explores the relationship between them to better understand how they affect each other. For example, a person may turn to substance abuse to cope with their mental health disorder symptoms, or a person may have developed a mental health disorder after first developing a substance use disorder. Gaining knowledge about the connection between the two disorders can lead to improved treatment outcomes.

At Hope Ranch Recovery, our evidence-based treatment models are grounded in the latest research and clinical best practices, providing a robust framework for addressing these complex cases. By employing these proven methodologies, we enhance our clients' chances of achieving sustained recovery and improved mental health.

Evidence-Based Therapies for Dual Diagnosis

Tailored to Each Client's Journey

Our treatment process begins with a thorough assessment conducted by our multidisciplinary team of professionals. This evaluation helps us understand the full scope of each client's challenges, including the interplay between their substance use and mental health issues. Based on this comprehensive assessment, we develop a personalized treatment plan that incorporates evidence-based therapies specifically designed for co-occurring disorders. Some of the therapies we utilize to treat dual diagnosis include:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is one of the cornerstone therapies we use to treat co-occurring disorders. CBT helps clients identify and change negative thought patterns and behaviors that contribute to both their addiction and mental health conditions.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is another effective approach, particularly for individuals with intense emotional dysregulation and self-destructive behaviors. DBT teaches clients skills in mindfulness, emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness.
Group therapy and peer support are also vital components of our treatment model. These sessions provide a supportive community where clients can share their experiences, learn from others facing similar challenges, and develop a sense of belonging and accountability.
Family therapy is another crucial element, helping to rebuild and strengthen family relationships that may have been strained by addiction and mental health issues.

In addition to these therapies, we integrate Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) when appropriate. MAT combines FDA-approved medications with counseling and behavioral therapies to treat substance use disorders and alleviate symptoms of co-occurring mental health conditions. This comprehensive approach helps to stabilize clients, reduce cravings, and improve their overall mental health, creating a more solid foundation for recovery.

Holistic Elements of Our Dual Diagnosis Treatment

Treating the mind, body, and Spirit

While evidence-based treatments play a crucial role in our dual diagnosis care, we complement them with holistic practices proven to promote improved well-being. Here are some of the holistic techniques we utilize to ensure comprehensive support at our dual diagnosis treatment center in Riverside:
Gardening: Gardening has been found to decrease stress and anxiety. Whether it’s from spending time in nature or the simple act of taking care of another living thing, gardening can be an incredibly restorative practice. Clients can practice gardening in our newly built greenhouse. The vegetables they grow will be used in meals at our treatment center.
Nature therapy: We engage our clients in nature therapy practices so they can reap the many benefits of being outdoors, which can include decreased anxiety levels. Our residential program includes biweekly outings that give clients opportunities to be in nature, such as visits to local hiking areas or a nearby lake.
Equine therapy: Working with a horse under the guidance of a trained therapist can provide deep insight into who you are as a person and how you relate to others. Our on-site equine therapy program allows you to engage in this unique therapeutic practice.
Meditation: Meditation has been proven to have many positive effects on mental health, including reducing stress and anxiety. We incorporate mediation practices into our daily schedule. In addition to these practices, we also offer yoga, aromatherapy, art therapy, somatic experiencing, sound therapy, and massage therapy.
Together, these holistic techniques improve the well-being of our clients’ minds, bodies, and spirits. With this whole-person approach, clients can leave our treatment center feeling restored and ready to thrive in recovery.

Levels of Care in Dual Diagnosis Treatment

Treating the mind, body, and Spirit

Our Riverside treatment center offers detox and residential treatment services. Both of these levels of care can be tailored to support dual diagnosis treatment needs.

Detox

Our specialized dual diagnosis detox program begins with an in-depth psychiatric evaluation in addition to a medical assessment. Our dedicated team of medical specialists will then monitor you while you progress through detox, providing medication management services to enhance your comfort and safety during what can be an uncomfortable time. Our efforts are focused on stabilizing a person’s physical and mental health so they feel prepared to continue along the path of recovery and start a comprehensive treatment program.

Residential Treatment

Our residential treatment program, ranging in length between 30 and 45 days, offers structured support in a safe environment where clients can feel respected and valued. During their time with us, clients will stay at our six-bed facility located on 10 acres of beautiful California nature. In this serene environment, clients can take the time to truly focus on healing. They’ll participate in 40 hours of therapy a week, and these therapeutic practices can be tailored to address both aspects of a client’s dual diagnosis. Before leaving our residential program, clients work with our team to develop an aftercare plan, which may include finding continuing care like outpatient treatment or sober housing. No matter what your next step is, our team will be there to help facilitate the transition.
